Unwind Reflection Journals
Part 1
Answer the following reflection questions in your journal. Make sure that you answer them before or after the selected reading! If you do not, your opinion might be changed, which will therefore affect your answer. These are your opinions, so there is no right or wrong answer as long as you back it up! These will not be displayed for others to read so do not worry about censoring your thoughts just because you are afraid of what others will think. These may be typed or hand written, just stick with the same format for all of them. Each answer should be at least 100 words.

- Before opening the book – What are your thoughts and opinions on the current abortion debate: pro-choice or pro-life. What are the pros and cons to each?
- After reading “The Bill of Life” – Unwinding is essentially donating an ENTIRE body to medical purposes. Every single piece of a person would help countless others live on through organ donation. Do you think that this is a realistic reason for a civil war? What do you think of this new law? Is it a good compromise on both sides?
- After reading Chapter 1 – There is no process to undo an unwinding. What are your thoughts about being able to unwind an unruly teenager? What do you think the process should have to be for a parent to do such a thing? Paperwork? “Think it over” time? Require a reason or proof? How bad does a teen have to be do you think in order to be unwound?
- After reading Chapter 2 – What would be the pros and cons of unwinding an unskilled ward of the state? This would include orphans, prisoners, anyone drawing unemployment or disability. Do you think that they deserve to be unwound? What would it do to a society overall where this was the policy?
- After reading Chapter 3 – A tithe is when you give 10% of everything you have to your religion. In most cases this means money, but Lev’s family decides that this also means children. He is the 10th child and has been raised his entire life knowing that he was going to be a tithe sacrifice for the church. What are your thoughts on this? It’s not like it was a surprise unwinding, everyone has known that this was going to happen Lev’s entire life. What if it was just an organ donation that wouldn’t kill Lev? Do parents have a right to demand their minor children to donate things that will not kill them: blood, kidney, lung, or liver?

Part 2
- After reading the Part Two intro page – Which nurse is more correct? Nurse Greta or Nurse Yvonne?
- After Chapter 9 - The current law that we have is called the “Safe-Haven Law”, which states that new mothers may drop off their newborn babies to certain locations such as hospitals or police stations without consequences. The baby will then become a ward of the state and be put up for adoption. The idea is that then new mothers are not leaving their newborns to die in dumpsters or on road sides. Explain what “storking” is. What do you think of this law? Do you think that it is a good way to ensure the safety of newborns? Do you think it is fair to everyone?
- After reading chapter 12 – Do you think that it is better to have teen mothers than to have abortion or adoption? They seem to be fully supported in the book, with daycares and government aid. What about what happened to the father of Alex’s child? He went away to military school and never had to take care of the child. Do you have a better option that you can think of?
- After reading chapter 14 – Quote from Connor from this chapter: “I remember thinking, if a baby was going to be so unloved, why would God want it brought into the world?” What are your thoughts on that (if you are religious or not)? Reflect on what the adults did with the storked baby. Being passed around for two weeks with no one to care for it until it died a horrible death. Do you think that they were feeding, changing, and snuggling the baby?
- After reading chapter 20 – Risk versus reward. Do you think that it was worth it for Sonia to help the unwinds? What do you think of her letter policy? If you were an unwind, who would you write your letter to and why? Would it be an angry letter? An apology? Telling someone how much you love and would miss them?

Part 3
- Before chapter 21 - Put the following life priorities in order for yourself, where “1” is the most important and “7” is the least important. Explain why you ordered them how you did.
- Country
- Education
- Family
- Freedom
- Friends
- Job
- Religion
- After reading chapter 24 – What would you have done in Connor or Risa’s shoes? IS Connor a hero or a coward? Is Risa right to be upset and angry even though Connor was just doing what she told him to do?

Part 4
- After reading chapter 28 – The boys discussed a lot of things while stuck in the box. What are your opinions? Would you want a part from an unwound or would you rather die? Do you think that an unwound is truly dead and would go to heaven or are they in a state of limbo? What happens to the human soul after an unwinding? When does a human officially get a soul?
- After reading chapter 31 – This is a very emotional chapter for Lev (and Cy and Tyler before that). I just want you to reflect on this situation. What are your thoughts about Cy/Tyler’s situation? About Lev’s change of self?

Part 5
- After reading chapter 33 – The Admiral has created a little community with the unwinds. They are filling adult roles quickly. Everyone has a job and a purpose. His “10 Demandments” make sure that everyone is treated equally, no matter their background. During Risa’s interview she cannot think of any skill that she was good at except for playing piano. As they point out, this is not a helpful skill in a survival situation. If you were put before the tribunal, what skill or skills would you say that you have that could be helpful. What job would you want?
- After reading chapter 34 – That chapter was a lot to take in. A lot of information about secrets and the past and spying. What do you think of the admiral’s plan? What about his “secrets”? Do you think he is telling the truth or just trying to get Connor on his side? Do you think that Roland killed the five goldens? Why or why not? Reflect on all of this new information.
- After reading chapter 35 – Lev has changed A LOT since the beginning of the book. How has he changed? Why has he changed? How can traumatic events change a person? Can you relate to Lev at all? Do you think that he is right to be so angry? Or is he just being over dramatic?
- After reading chapter 37 – What is going on with Emby and the Admiral? What do you think is going to happen to Emby? Take an educated guess and explain why you are predicting his future the way you are.
- After reading chapter 46 – Connor has changed since the beginning of the book. How has he changed? What events and circumstances has caused him to change the way he has? Why would he yell, “You should all be unwound!”? Do you think he meant to say it or it just came out without warning? Why did the other kids react that way when he said it?
- After reading chapter 50 – What do you think of the juvey cops and their reaction to the news about the unwinds? Do you agree or disagree with them? Do you agree or disagree that they needed to make examples of Risa, Connor, and Roland? Why?

Part 6
- After reading chapter 61 – What are you feelings after reading from the point of view of someone as they are being unwound? What if that were you? Have you ever had a surgery where they numbed you and you couldn’t feel the pain, but still knew that something was going on?
